It’s Carnival Time!

It’s almost time for our Carnival! Next Thursday, January 14th, from 5-7PM we will be hosting the YSES PTA Carnival! Students who turned in mailing labels for the Race For Education fundraiser have earned Bonus Tickets to participate in games. Tickets will be available for pick-up when they arrive to play! Mrs. Strohmeyer will be help to hand out tickets at the door. This is a FREE event! There will be carnival games and refreshments available. We hope to see you there!  We are also looking for volunteers to help. The Schwan’s Cares Program is at the halfway mark. Keep spreading the word to your family, friends, neighbors, email contacts…EVERYONE! Every order placed earns 20% toward the exciting events we have planned for YSES this year.

Race for Education letters will be going into the mail by the end of this week. If you requested a PDF copy of your child’s letter to send to your email contacts, you should receive them in your email by the end of today. Volunteers will be needed for the day of the event, November 19th. We will let you know when the Volunteer request list has been added to the Volunteer! page.

Spirit Wear orders are due BY November 1st if you are ordering online. Paper orders are due by this Friday, Oct. 23rd.

Our next PTA meeting is Monday, November 2nd at 6:30PM in the YSES Cafeteria. Please plan to attend. We have a lot to talk about and we want to hear from you!

Our next Spirit Night is scheduled for November 10th at Famous Dave’s. This one is an all day event! So plan on lunch, dinner or BOTH!!

Labels for the Race for Education will be coming home this week. Also, students have filled out their donation request forms which will be sent using the labels that you send back to school. New this year, if you fill in your email address on the form, we will send you a pdf copy of your student’s donation request form and you can then email it to your contacts! We are also now set up to receive donations through PayPal!Using these electronic options will save mailing and printing costs, and is more environmentally friendly!


Unfortunately, we were given incomplete information when we began pursuing the installation of a new street sign. We have learned that the process for gaining approval can take more than a year. Therefore, our application has not been approved at this time. We have been in close contact with Administration and we have come up with a plan that we feel meets the school’s and student’s needs.

That being said, our fundraising efforts could not be halted simply because the sign plan wasn’t approved. It was something we had not anticipated, but we knew it was a possibility. All is not lost! By FCPS rules, we cannot specifically fundraise for a street sign unless it has been fully approved. Therefore, in order to keep with our timeline for other events, such as our Quarterly Carnivals, Movie and Family Game Nights, Assemblies, etc. our fundraising efforts will be more broad. For example, RFE will be used for Classroom Enrichment, The Carnivals, Movie and Game Nights,Starter funds for some of our popular after-school programs, T-shirts and supplies for Field Day and any other items needing funds per the approved budget.

The plan is to make sure all budget items are adequately funded and the PTA members can vote on what to do with any overage. In speaking with Mrs. Strohmeyer and Mrs. Stein there is still a need for a message board. We have found and plan to purchase a portable message board that can be used daily or as needed and can be moved indoors when not in use. The cost of this item is <$500 and would have many different applications. We have asked Mrs. Strohmeyer to compile a list of wants and needs for the school and we are also working on a list. We will be discussing possibilities at each of the monthly PTA meetings, but we want your input! (The next meeting is October 5th at 6:30pm.)

At the next General Membership meeting in January, we will then decide that to do with any additional funds raised.

It’s that time of year, again! Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year at Yellow Springs Elementary. I was in the school today as the teachers returned from their summer break and are preparing their classrooms and the halls for the Student’s first day.  It was nice to see so many smiling faces and I can’t wait to see the halls full of students! Old bulletin boards were coming down and bright fresh ones were going up. Rooms were being organized and arranged, name tags were being added to desks and supplies were being stocked in the closets.

Hopefully you and your family have had a wonderful summer and are as eager to get back to school as we are!  Your new PTA Board has been hard at work all summer and we are looking forward to an amazing school year! We have many exciting things planned but we can’t do them without all of you…

Our first PTA meeting of the year is a very important one and we have a lot of very important decisions to make that will affect the entire school year. The meeting is Tuesday, September 1st, 2015 at 6:30pm in the cafeteria. This is a General Membership meeting and we will be voting on the budget. You will have an opportunity to register for this year (you have to renew your membership with the PTA each year, the dues are $8.00/yr).  We also need your input on the type of sign/message board you might like to see out in front of our school. There will be a few options available for review. We are also putting to vote a few fundraising plans and concepts that we would like to hear your thoughts on, as well. Please plan to attend, as we will be sharing our vision for the year and we want to hear from you! (Please note: This is the only meeting that will be held on a Tuesday. All other monthly PTA meetings will be held on the 1st Monday of the Month.)
